HARMONIC AND MELODIC EXERCISES AS TAUGHT BY LENNIE TRISTANO
by Lennie Tristano

“You could make your fingers reproduce exactly what you felt, if you really worked at it. I achieved it, not only spending a lot of time at the keyboard but finding ways I could make my fingers reproduce my deepest feelings. It meant, when you hit a note with a finger, you sank into that note all the way to the bottom of the keyboard until it went pow!”
This is a famous quote from Lennie Tristano (1919-78), who along with Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk ranks among the most important pianists in mid 20th century jazz scene. Additionally, Tristano was a pioneer in structured jazz education by teaching musicians from the late 1940s until his death.
The examples of Tristano’s teaching have been related by Sal Mosca (1927-2007), one of Tristano’s most gifted students, and an excellent pianist and teacher in his own right. These exercises represent only one aspect among many others which Tristano passed on.

As a bonus, four of Lennie Tristano's historically significant recording tracks are included.
